Can you tell us a bit about your background?
A long career in research and the charity sector combined with my own life experiences has led me to become a therapist. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Counselling from Heartwood Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have over 250 hours of experience as a therapist, working with clients from a range of backgrounds and with varying mental health challenges.
I also hold a PhD in Social Science from Queen Mary University of London. Throughout my career, I have spoken to hundreds of people from different walks of life about what is important to them, the challenges and highlights in their life and what gives them meaning. To me, there are many overlaps between therapy and research. For example, the need for active listening, that people are experts in their own lives and the desire to look for patterns and relationships within ourselves, our communities and the world around us. Throughout my career, I have continuously explored feminism, women’s empowerment and agency.
I am also a professional potter. If appropriate, I like to work in creative ways with clients.
What would it be like to meet you?
To me, the most important element in therapy is the relationship between the client and therapist. I believe if you can talk to a person and you can trust them then these are key ingredients for successful therapy to happen. Therefore, I like to meet clients before we start sessions (I offer a free 20-minute phone or video call consultation). This gives us a chance to see if we are a good fit for one another.
My previous clients have told me I am kind, empathic, patient and create an empowering environment in therapy. I am a ‘heart on sleeve’ and ‘glass half full’ type of person. In our first session, we will explore your goals for therapy, what success looks like to you and how you would like life to be different. I am interested in understanding all your feelings whether that is sadness, joy, fear, anger, depression, anxiety or excitement. I am interested in creating a space where you can safely explore all your feelings whether that be anger, sadness, joy, excitement or fear.
What therapies do you use and what kind of difficulties do you help people with?
People come to me with different experiences and challenges in their lives. For example, you may have low self-esteem, feel out of control with anxiety, struggle with depression, eating disorders, grief, chronic pain, relationship challenges or have experienced physical, emotional and/or sexual abuse.
I work with different therapeutic approaches to suit your individual needs. My approach is collaborative - we work together to find your own authentic self, to develop a story of who you are and map out your future. I see therapy as a shared puzzle we try to solve together.
I work in an intersectional way, exploring what makes you unique. For example, how the combination of your race, culture, class, age, gender, sexuality etc shapes how you experience the world.
